post X

I had a great time at X on Saturday–everyone was amazingly friendly.  Here’s a picture of me displaying one of my new posters:

X in DC Saturday night!

Join me at X in DC this Saturday, where I’m the guest vendor! The monthly ‘X’ event brings together graphic designers, DJs, artists, and performers of all kinds. The intention is to create a 21st century Live-art “happening.” X brings artists out of their personal studios and into a multi-media, live-art environment that a.) shakes up the artist’s creative process through the power of a creatively charged environment b.) exposes people to various approaches to the creative process and c.) features forward thinking artistic talent. And the whole thing culminates in a dance party, Pulse!

X and PULSE - August 16th, 7pm to 11pm, then dance ’til 3am at Bebar (1318 9th St. NW, Washington, DC). The $8 cover charge is reduced to $5 if you incorporate the theme into your outfit.

David Fogel, the creator, says, “This month at ‘X’ we’ll be throwing a fundraiser for Obama, so the theme is: OBAMA! Start thinking about the things that Obama represents to you and how you’ll incorporate that into your steeze.”

Here’s a selection of the calling cards I’ve been working on for the past few weeks. I hope to finish the series today and get them on the site soon. I picture someone using these to break the ice with a stranger. But I’m also just excited to have a cute conversation piece to break out when someone I know asks me for my contact info.

I’m no luddite, but now that cell phones are ubiquitous, it’s much rarer to get little scraps of people’s handwriting. I miss having those floating around my desk and my bedroom. I can custom-print these with someone’s phone number or email, but I like the idea of people writing their own little note on the cards.

letterpress lifestyle

I’ve practically been living in the letterpress studio since I got back from the beach a few weeks ago and took over as Letterpress Associate at Pyramid Atlantic. Most of it’s teaching–I think I gave letterpress lessons to 8 people this week! I’m finding that exhausting but fun. I’m impressed with the projects people are designing as beginners. They’re more daring than I remember my first few projects being.

My pal Tim of Dynamite Printworks brought his camera to our little group lesson the other night!

I got one of Chris and Julia’s prints in the mail yesterday too!

farewell

My friend Julia has been getting into typography, and after a funny conversation we had in the letterpress shop last week, she sent me a link to “Behind the Type: Cooper Black,” a cute parody of VH1’s “Behind the Music” for type nerds.

When I heard the announcer’s intonation I got nostalgic for “Yacht Rock.” R.I.P.

Crafty Bastards this Saturday!

Crafty Bastards, the City Paper’s “indie craft extravaganza,” was the first craft fair I ever did, and was where I befriended my best pal, Patty. We’ll both be back at Crafty Bastards 2008 this Saturday, June 28!

Another special thing about this year’s fair is that it’s taking place at Pyramid Atlantic, the book art and printmaking center where I do my letterpress printing.

Stop by to see 70 vendors, local music, a craft swap, and lots of free workshops!
