My excuse for not blogging more this summer: I spent most of it in Paris, relishing the time away from my laptop. The Musée des Lettres et Manuscrits was probably my favorite new discovery. I had just finished the second book of Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu (en anglais, bien sûr!), so I checked out the temporary exhibit on him. There was a fun map that showed links between real people in Proust’s life and characters in the novel. (Fun fact: Baron de Charlus was inspired by Oscar Wilde.)

There was plenty to love in the permanent collection as well. Cuneiform writing on tablets, a handwritten account of the sinking of the Titanic (possibly by the lady who inspired the James Cameron movie, but I wouldn’t know because it’s the only film I’ve ever walked out of!), letters between many of the important monarchs in French and European history, artifacts from WWII, tiny missives sent via carrier pigeon, postal art, and papers from some of the foremost artists, scientists, and thinkers of the past few centuries: Freud, Darwin, Mozart, etc.

Turing’s Enigma machine and Edison’s lightbulb in a handy carrying case:

I loved the section on composers. Puccini’s scores were lovely to look at. I liked Berlioz’s frenetic composition style too:

I wish I could remember more. I did write down a bit of a letter by Hemingway:

“It’s funny though how literary people hate fishing and shooting. They also hate kidding. If you kid that means you can’t really be any good because they wouldn’t kid because that would mean a loss of their dignity.”

It’s about time I caught you up on what I’ve been up to this summer! In June, I headed to Massachusetts with Julia and Leslie for a class with Vandercook guru Paul Moxon at the Museum of Printing in North Andover. The topic was “Letterpress Finesse,” so we messed around with makeready, ink additives, paper choice, etc. to fine-tune our printing techniques.

I adore the folks at the Museum, a few of whom I met last year when I took Paul’s excellent Vandercook maintenance class (which will be coming to Pyramid in October if all goes as planned!)

The best part is just poking around in their collection! I highly recommend a visit. The tiny town of North Andover is about 40 minutes north of Boston.

Dave, a printer from Mass, and I look on as Paul diagnoses a problem with the eccentric on this Vandercook. What you see behind us is a tiny fraction of the museum’s collection!

Beautiful platen press! Love the flywheel and treadle.

The Museum has technology from just about every period of printing throughout history–even Macintoshes that could have come from my elementary school library! The typewriters are a favorite.

Introduction to Letterpress, weeknights
2 Wednesdays, May 12 + 26, 6-9pm
A small group workshop for beginners who want an introduction to
traditional printing. The workshop will cover how to set metal type,
how to use a Vandercook press, how to troubleshoot to get good prints,
how to clean up and maintain the presses, and some information about
how to use digital technology in combination with letterpress. Each
participant will print a few lines of text of their own choosing on
postcard to poster-sized paper.
Tuition: $130

Introduction to the Tabletop Letterpress
Saturday, June 5, 10am-4pm
Have you ever fantasized about having a small letterpress in your
home? Try out this small group workshop for beginners who want to try
printing on a tabletop platen press. The class will cover how to set
metal type, use a Chandler & Price Pilot tabletop platen press,
troubleshoot, and clean up and maintain the press. Each participant
will print a few lines of text of their own choosing on business card
to postcard-sized paper.
Tuition: $130

Vandercook Review and Practice Day
Sunday, June 13, open from 10am-4pm, show up at any time and stay for
as long as you like
Has it been awhile since you used the Vandercook? Want to review
typesetting and printing on the Vandercook before you come back to
rent the studio independently? This open-house style class is open to
anyone who has learned how to use a Vandercook at Pyramid or elsewhere
and just needs to refresh their knowledge. Experienced printers will
be on hand to assist.
Fee: $30

The Next Step: Using Photopolymer on the Vandercooks
Saturday June 19, 10am-4pm
Are you familiar with printing metal type, but want to learn how to
expand your practice using photopolymer? A one-day small group
session covers the basics of designing and creating Illustrator files
for photopolymer and ordering the appropriate kind of plate. You will
also practice printing photopolymer plates on our Vandercooks.
Suitable for students who have taken Intro to Letterpress.
Tuition: $100

Letterpressed Wedding Invitations
2 Sundays, April 25 and May 30, 10am-4pm plus one 4-hour individual
appointment completed by June 30
Thinking of making your own invitations or save-the-date cards for a
wedding or commitment ceremony? During two group sessions, work with
a graphic designer and a printer to develop your design, get feedback
on presentation and paper, prepare your design for production, and
learn how to print photopolymer plates on a Vandercook press.
Finally, enjoy individualized attention as you print your invitations
during a one-on-one session. Elaborate designs may require extra
sessions (not included). Suitable for beginners.
Instructors: Nancy Bratton and Moira McCauley
Tuition: $410 per individual or $460 per couple, + the cost of a
polymer plate and your own paper
